PnP within Diversity Project

Complete Project Title: Towards tailored services for sexually and gender-diverse people with problematic use of methamphetamine and other related substances: an approach to support their development with respect to their sexual orientation and gender identity

À propos

A large body of literature documents that sexually and gender-diverse (SGD) people use more substances than the rest of the population. Recent evidence also shows that certain substances, including methamphetamine, may increase issues related to substance use in this population. Despite this finding, SGD people are slow to seek help from traditional addiction services and when they do, their health profile is more severe compared to other users. Our previous work reveals that SGD people who use methamphetamine and related substances find fewer appropriate responses to their needs in existing services. In addition, services for SGD people do not have guidelines for dealing with people who use methamphetamine.

With this in mind, this project aims to: 1) characterize sexually and gender-diverse people who use methamphetamine; 2) identify their needs in terms of care; 3) inventory the current service offer for people who use methamphetamine in the Greater Montreal area and in two other administrative regions of Quebec 4) evaluate the adequacy of the existing services to meet the needs and realities of SGD; and, 5) propose guidelines for the management of SGD  people within the current services, as well as guidelines for developing services sensitive to the realities of this population. In order to achieve these objectives, a qualitative study based on the Rapid Assessment Process (RAP) is underway. Semi-structured interviews have been conducted with 22 managers and caseworkers working with SGD in three regions of Quebec and SGD individuals using methamphetamine are currently being recruited.  The data collected in this project will allow for the development of guidelines for the optimal management of SGD people who use methamphetamine or other psychoactive substances.
