Psychoactive Substance Use Among Our Teens

Substance use (alcohol, cannabis, other drugs) is an issue that has been exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Wanting to explore new sensations, keep up with friends, cope with stress or overcome difficult times, research in Quebec suggests that the initiation to substance use often begins during adolescence (11-16 years). Substance abuse or chronic use during adolescence can lead to memory deficits, decreased motivation, school dropout and increased risk of psychosis, depression, and anxiety (INSPQ, 2010). Knowing that social norms, attitudes, and beliefs surrounding drugs are predictive variables of drug use among youth, it is all the more relevant to become aware of them in order to use them as a leverage for intervention. During this panel of experts (in French), we will review the current state of substance use among youth and discuss risk and protective factors, in order to propose some adapted intervention approaches. Our guests: – Karine Bertrand, clinical psychologist, professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the Université de Sherbrooke and holder of the IRSC Research Chair on Gender and Intervention in Addiction. – Jorge Flores-Aranda, professor in the School of Social Work at the Université du Québec à Montréal and regular researcher at the University Institute on Addictions. – Myriam Laventure PH.D., Ps.ed. is responsible for the certificate in addiction at the University of Sherbrooke and a regular researcher at the University Institute on Addictions (IUD) and the Research and Intervention on Substances – Quebec (RISQ) group.
